Students will read and discuss Romeo and Juliet. First giving attention to Shakespeare’s use of poetry and prose, character types and how R&J fits into the genre of dramatic tragedy, students will follow with the opportunity to stage short scenes and soliloquies.
Each class will divide the time between discussion and "on-your-feet" work speaking the text. Students do not need a particular interest or any prior experience in acting for this class! Group work on simple, short pieces of text will ease the entire class into working with the language and characters of R&J.
At the culmination of the class, each student will have the opportunity to demonstrate his/her understanding of the play through both a short "on-your-feet" project and a written exercise.
