The American Library Association announced book award winners at their recent midwinter meeting. You can see the link to the full press release here.

Book award winners cover a range of categories. The John Newbery Medal is awarded for the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature. The Randolph Caldecott Medal winner created the most distinguished American picture book for children. And the Coretta Scott King (Author) Book Award recognizes an African-American author and illustrator of outstanding books for children and young adults. This year’s collection of book award winners emphasizes diversity across authors and subject matters.

book award winnersMerci Suárez Changes Gears,” written by Meg Medina, is the 2019 Newbery Medal winner. Medina is a prolific writer who isn’t afraid to take on some controversial. I look forward to reading this book and sharing thoughts with you!

Hello Lighthouse,” by Sophie Blackall, is the 2019 Caldecott Medal winner. This book looks precious and perfect for our younger students, and I’ve ordered a copy for the center.

What caught my eye next on the book award winners was this section: the Alex Awards for the 10 best adult books that appeal to teen audiences. One book on the list has been on my personal reading list for some time: Educated by Tara Westover. First, I’m going to give myself permission to read this book, which has received so much attention since its publication a year ago.

New books to read! What a treasure.
